Instructions
After photodynamic therapy (PDT), it is essential to follow specific care instructions to ensure proper healing and minimize side effects.
Immediate Post-Treatment Care
-
Skin Sensitivity: Your skin will be extremely sensitive to light for up to 48 hours after treatment. Avoid all sun exposure during this time and wear a broad-brimmed hat and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen when outdoors and when in riding in cars.
-
Redness and Peeling: Expect redness, peeling, and possibly crusting of the treated area. Peeling usually occurs within 2-4 days and can last up to 7 days. Do not pick or peel flaking skin, as this can lead to complications.
-
If you develop significant crusting, please contact the office.
-
Pain Management: If you experience pain or swelling, over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen can help. Ice packs may also be applied to reduce swelling.
-
If the above is not managing the pain, please contact the office.
-
-
Cleansing and Moisturizing: Use a mild, soap-free cleanser (like Cetaphil) to wash the treated area. Apply a bland moisturizer, such as Aquaphor or Vaseline, to keep the skin hydrated and minimize crusting.
-
Avoid Scrubbing: Do not scrub or rub the treated area. Allow the skin to heal naturally.
-
Monitor for Infection: If you notice excessive redness, swelling, or pus, contact your healthcare provider, as these may be signs of infection.
-
Follow-Up Appointment: Schedule a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider 14 days after the procedure to assess healing and address any concerns.
-
Long-Term Care
-
Sun Protection: Continue to protect the treated area from sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after treatment. Use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and wear protective clothing.
By adhering to these post-treatment care guidelines, you can promote effective healing and minimize potential side effects following your PDT treatment. If you have any concerns or unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for advice.
